Jazzing Up New Mexico

Michael Metz Talks EQNX Jazztet

By Samantha Anne Carrillo

In Albuquerque, jazz doesn’t always manifest within concert halls. Jazz happens on a Tuesday at a local brewery, at a Sunday jam session where you sign in early or lose your spot, at a winery in the North Valley where the audience is wildly appreciative. And jazz happens here because somebody keeps showing up to make it happen.

One of those culturally vital somebodies is Michael Metz. The Albuquerque trumpet player and bandleader sat down with Jaimey B., lead host for ¡Viva New Mexico!, for a video interview about his work with EQNX Jazztet—and what comes through most is the thing you can’t fake: he loves this music.

Metz talks about the quintet structure, about playing original work, about what it means to build something in your own city. EQNX Jazztet describes itself as “modern jazz with a classic twist. Or is it classic jazz with a modern twist? Or both?” Watch the below interview and you’ll understand why that question is sort of the whole point.

Catch EQNX Jazztet live locally: on May 21 from 6-8pm at Los Poblanos’ Town & Ranch; on May 22 from 6-9pm at Casa Rondeña Winery; and on May 29 from 11am-1pm for Sunport Serenades. Follow the band on Facebook to connect and learn more.
