Forge Fitness: Building Strength Beyond the Gym

By Sarah Beuzekom

In a world where fitness is often reduced to aesthetics for the grid and quick transformations, Forge Fitness is redefining what it means to be strong. For Sandra and Teofilo Rael, strength is not just measured in weight lifted or pounds lost, it is found in resilience, recovery, and the ability to rebuild a life after struggle.

Behind the workouts and group sessions is a deeper mission rooted in lived experience. Both Sandra and Teofilo have faced personal battles with addiction, mental health, and trauma; experiences that now shape the way they lead their community. What started as a fitness journey has evolved into something far more impactful: a space where people are not only physically transformed, but emotionally supported and empowered.

The foundation of Forge Fitness can be traced back to earlier work through Fit Body Boot Camp, where the focus was already centered on helping individuals improve their health. However, over time, it became clear that there was a much larger need within the community, one that extended beyond physical fitness. The Rael’s recognized a gap, particularly in support for mental health and veterans, and felt called to address it. That calling was not abstract. It was personal.

Teofilo, a veteran who served multiple deployments in Iraq, witnessed firsthand the long-term effects of trauma and the lack of accessible, meaningful support systems for those transitioning back into civilian life. Combined with the loss of close friends to suicide and his own struggles with addiction and depression, these experiences became a turning point. After following serious health complications due to addiction, Teofilo refers to a moment of “tough love” from a doctor that forced him to confront the reality of his situation and the impact it was having on his family. That experience became the catalyst for change, ultimately leading toward recovery and a renewed sense of purpose. Rather than allowing those challenges to define him, he chose to build something that could help others find a different path.

Sandra’s journey reflects a similarly powerful transformation. After years of navigating a difficult home environment shaped by trauma and alcoholism, she reached a breaking point. Determined to not only heal but better understand how to support others, Sandra pursued education in nutrition, deepening her knowledge of how food, habits, and wellness play a critical role in both physical and mental health. This commitment allowed her to bring a more informed, balanced approach to Forge Fitness, reinforcing the idea that true transformation goes beyond workouts and starts with sustainable lifestyle changes.

Together, their stories form the backbone of Forge Fitness.

The transition into owning and operating the gym itself came unexpectedly. After running a boot camp and building a strong coaching foundation, the opportunity to take over Forge Fitness was presented to them through a trusted relationship with Teofilo’s friend and mentor, Javier Rodriguez. What might have seemed like a business decision on the surface was described as something much deeper, it was a “transaction of love” says Teofilo. It was an opportunity to continue their mission on a larger scale, without losing sight of why they started in the first place.

Today, Forge Fitness operates with a holistic approach that combines fitness, nutrition, and mental health support. Rather than promoting restrictive diets or unrealistic standards, the focus is on balance and sustainability. Clients are encouraged to build healthy relationships with food, movement, and themselves, creating long-term change rather than temporary results.

One of the most impactful aspects of their work is their commitment to veterans. Recognizing the ongoing mental health crisis within this community where an estimated 22 veterans a day lose their lives to suicide, the Rael’s have made it a priority to create a safe and supportive environment. By offering free workouts for veterans during the last week of each month, Forge Fitness provides not only physical training but also a sense of belonging and connection.

Community involvement plays a central role in everything they do. Forge Fitness regularly partners with local organizations to give back, including food drives with Roadrunner Food Bank, collaborations with Ronald McDonald House, and outreach efforts with local schools as guest speakers to familiarize the youth on nutrition. In one instance of assisting the community, the team collected over 1,000 burgers and 1,500 hot dogs in just four days to support families in need. These initiatives reflect the broader philosophy that real change happens when people come together to support one another.

The impact of this work can be seen not only in numbers, but in individual stories. Clients have experienced significant physical transformations, but more importantly, they have gained confidence, stability, and a renewed sense of purpose. In one case, a veteran client was able to reduce reliance on high levels of medication while also losing a substantial amount of weight, ultimately becoming her own source of inspiration.

Despite these successes, the journey has not been without challenges. Running a business while maintaining a mission-driven focus has required sacrifice, including financial strain and difficult decision-making. Additionally, working as partners has brought its own set of obstacles, requiring constant communication and a willingness to grow together. As Sandra noted, one of the most important lessons has been learning not to shut ideas down, but instead to approach challenges with openness – “don’t say no, say let’s talk about it.”

What continues to drive their work is the belief that showing up matters. Whether it is for a workout, a conversation, or a community event, those small, consistent actions create a ripple effect. Over time, that ripple becomes transformation and not just for individuals, but for the community as a whole.

Looking ahead, the future of Forge Fitness is guided less by rigid plans and more by purpose. Grounded in faith, the Rael’s emphasize a willingness to follow wherever they are called, trusting that their work will continue to grow in alignment with that mission. Their ultimate goal is not just to expand the business, but to leave a lasting impact and creating a space that continues to serve and support others long into the future.

At its core, Forge Fitness is not just a gym. It reflects resilience, a response to real struggles, and a reminder that strength is built not only through physical effort, but through connection, healing, and community.
